At Home and Further Afield
Curatorial Project:
The project is a curated blind collaboration between artists from other places and artists that make their home here in Grand Rapids, MI, USA. The exhibition focuses on ideas of collaboration, artist mobility, concepts of local and foreign, and how the ease of sharing information changes the way that the standard business of art is done. Artists were chosen based on my experiences with them, having met each at various times and in various places; they represent a wide range of media, experience levels, and geography. Viewers may find the exhibition visually and/or thematically incongruent, which I have attempted to mitigate in small part by assigning a specific scale to the works. This putting together is not a matter of mere matching styles or materials, but it is a combining of efforts, providing a foil to spark a new idea, a new approach, a new way of looking at how we each function as artists.
The Process:
I have invited artist from outside of GR send a digital image of the work that they wish to have executed for the exhibition.
A Grand Rapids based artist receives the image and a 12" square wood panel. The GR artist determines how to best translate and execute the piece for the exhibition, a visual mash-up of ideas and mediums.
The Event:
The exhibition is April 9th at SiTE:LAB's Autoshop at the Rumsey Street Project as part of the Avenue for the Arts event, Art.Downtown.
