Baseline
A baseline is a starting point, the point from which we measure variation, change. Baseline presents a matrix for viewers to interact with, a baseline to work from. In the process it plays with how we use technology, how it informs us, how it instructs us. Much of the virtual world created by social media platforms and mobile devices remains virtual, imagined. Baseline proposes a reverse engineering of this process, using the tools of the virtual world to manifest something in physical form, to make something come into being.
With changing technologies we may gain in speed and information but also risk loosing knowledge, loosing the ability to physically manipulate our world. Technologies are merely tools, that we can manipulate, or people can use to manipulate us. Baseline is about using these tools to guide people through a simple making experience, to reconnect people with the physical world.
The project would call upon viewers to fold a post-it style note, with instructions being made available via their smart phones or other media devices. After folding the piece of paper they would then attach it to the wall, above or below a line of pre-folded paper pieces. The piece would grow over the course of the exhibition becoming a physical, visual record of collective action orchestrated via social media.
