Deshabille (paper chain)
vellum, staples
High Five Project Space, Grand Rapids, MI 2012
This project was sparked by the simple childhood memory of making paper chains to decorate an elementary classroom. A simple lesson in using a plain material to create and transform a space. What if that simple action, making a paper chain, is expanded? What if this simple form moves beyond ornamenting a space to defining the space.
During the life of the piece viewers were invited to add a link to the paper chain, or maybe several, changing the space through collective action . The piece grew and changed over time and, in turn, continued to shape the space that it lived in. The growth was dependent upon another transformation, of viewer into participant, from passive to active.
